When I was a kid, the "fun" of the rockets was in building them.

But nowadays, you can get (pretty inexpensively) completely assembled rocket systems and spend all the "fun" in the launching and (in the case of my son) retrieving.

That's also the cool part -- your kids are young, so all they really wanna see are the launches.  ;-)
