What is the best Linux Distro?

Quest details: I've been playing around with several Linux Distros, and, while each one I've tried is good, none are quite what I'm looking for. What's your favorite and why?

  6. Automatix installs a bunch of nice apps for you so you can run MP3s and the like.  Highly recommended to run if you install Ubuntu!

  7. A 'live cd' is one you can boot from and run linux.  It doesn't do anything to your computer and lets you try out different versions of linux.

  8. Links to almost any imaginable program here - you may need after installing linux :)

  9. It's what I use, and it's a good entry point.  It has some issues (like avoid the 64 bit version, go with the i386) but generally it's very good.

If you install the 64 bit version, you will have a nightmare getting stuff like flash to run because they haven't released a 64 bit version.  You end up having to fudge the 32 bit version to work... too much effort if you are new to linux

Too vague

Far too vague.  Too many distros and too many choices.  Damn Small Linux is a fairly useless version for a computer, but perfect for running off a flash card for example.  I'll post some links to a selection though.

And for the record I am running Ubuntu :)

Wow. Now that's an answer or two for me. I realize it was an open question, but purposefully so.

I like Ubuntu (and Kubuntu), but I can't get either to run on my AMD64 on any resolution other than 400x600. Ugh! I tried the fixes, but I think it's my darned monitor.

Thanks for all the links, Sarisar!

Well my paypal account

Well my paypal account is....

Try running automatix as it installs nvidia drivers (if you need that).  I found it is the single most important thing to make ubuntu usable.  Oh and don't use the 64 bit version as I said before.

I've played around with linux for years but it's only the last few months I've really moved off windows (except for some games) and gone linux almost entirely.

I'm glad I could help :)
