I've been highly impressed with Lenovo Thinkpads--both the support and products are first rate. I would avoid Dell at all costs, unless you are a masochist by nature.
I'm a Dell Girl
First off, I will say that I own a PowerBack and when it was new, I did love it. In fact, when it works, I still love it. But I had a lot of troubles with hard drives in it, even though I never carried it around. They are a nice experience though.
My first laptop was a Dell, and I'm not on my third Dell. All three were inspirons. Currently I have the E1705. I've never been disappointed with one. The prior system did go through a few hard drives, but I did carry it around a lot. And since I had a service plan, the parts were all free. With imaging software, swapping them out wasn't much of a hassle. And the high resolution really impresses me.Â
I've also had one Compaq, which I got because it was on sale, and I wasn't paying. While I loved to complain about it and would probably not buy one again, I do have to say the things can take a beating. That one fell about 3 feet onto a cement floor and kept on going. I had a friend who dropped his just about nightly, and it kept on chugging too.
Lastly, the HP Pavillions are pretty good as well. I've used a couple, and my Director has had one for a few years, and it's not given her much trouble other than needing a new CD drive b/c somehow the eject button got crushed.
My first choice is always Dell. Then Apple, HP, other. Service wise, for me, I've faired much better and more pleasantly with Dell than I ever did with Apple.Â

Apple MacBook Pro
Get the best of both worlds in a nice package. I own a powerbook which is 4 years old now. In that time span the powerbook has served me well. But now with the ability to have windows in it as well I am almost ready to buy again.
My suggestion, buy any macbook pro or wait for the 2nd generation of the new macbooks.
Generally 1st. generation usually has some issues that are resolved in later revisions.
Cheers
