Give the ability for users to report links added to quests as:

Duplicate
Off Topic
Spam
Dead link

User must be on a quest to have access to report issues.

(Ajax implmentation)

Progress: 20% complete

Duplicates?

Duplicate links can be a pretty annoying problem, is there any way for you to alert users (within the Floster at least) if they are about to post a duplicate link? I know Newsvine has a feature like this, and it's very helpful once things really get started up.

RE: Duplicates

Matt,

We are working this. Duplicates warning message will appear, if the link already exists in the quest it is being posted to.

Thanks.

instead of a warning, it

instead of a warning, it would make more sense to force them to post, as a comment, to the existing link's StoreMark node.

Implementing a digg like

Implementing a digg like rating system so the most useful links float to the top. See: http://drupal.org/project/vote_up_down Would also be interesting to experiment with giving the ratings of those subscribed to the quest a higher weight.

Generalized rating system.

I think it might be very valuable to generalize the rating / ranking system to the greater Otavo cloud.

  • Users
  • Quests
  • Blog entries
  • StoreMarks
  • Forum posts
  • Comments

Basically, anything that can reward points. Maybe even use the ranking system to influence points somehow -- that might provide a decent (automated) mechanism to prevent link spamming or trolling for points.

And also, shorter/simpler is better. I'm a big fan of a zero-sum scale, so something starts at "neutral" and can either be positively or negatively impacted by the vote/rank (something as simple as Yay/Nay or Thumb up/down or +/-)...

 Just a thought.

Recommend link button

How about a button to say 'yes I know about this link and would recommend it because it is gurt lush' (er.. gurt lush is very good for those that didn't know).

Perhaps linking it in with how long someone has been on at otavo, because otherwise you could create a few new accounts and boost up your links... well potentially - too much effort for me but spammers may well do that. So if you are, say... < 1 month old then you don't get to recommend links.

OK may need some more work, but does that sound useful?

Talking of spammers

Is it me or is age_magician trying to drum up hits on his sites?  He's posted 3 quests that are 'look at my website'.

Is there plans afoot to allow people to vote spammy links or something to reduce this?

There are two mechanisms

There are two mechanisms planned to deal with this...

The first is the greneral rating system where users will vote up/down for different quests and links. The second deals with more severe case where the moderator will be alerted and action taken.

In this specific case, it may be spammy or not. The quest is structured in a way that it is a generic enough, but the only content provided seems to be self serving, even if it is on topic. Since other users with interest in the quest may join and add to it, it is better to let these quests be.

In general users will be allowed to rate quests they have joined. As they have an interest in the subject matter they would be best able to rate the quest and content in it.

However, if a quest seems to have no reason for being other than self promotion, otavo users(even if they are not in the quest) will be able to report it as spam and it will be removed from the system, and the user who reported it will be rewarded.

You can read about the new rating system planned Here...

Looking forward to any thoughts you have on this...

Actually after looking at

Actually after looking at the quests involved I agree with you. The quests involved were not generic enough and too tied in with the user's website.

I have modfied them accordingly, thanks for the tip.

Another strange set of posts

http://www.otavo.com/user/turbotad

Turbotad seems to be answering his own questions for points.  Heck he's got 700 points in a little over a day so far from doing that.

Thoughts / comments people?  I won't comment any more then that, although I of course have my own views I won't prejudice yours :)

Answering your own questions is part of the process

We have noticed that most new users start out with posting information they already have. Usually a user takes a bookmark folder or a set of folders, creates a quest that gathers the information in some fashion, and posts all the relevant links she has.

This gives the new user some valuable practice as they get used to questing and Otavo in general. Since most quests have 'room to grow' new information and insights may gained as others join and contribute to the quest.

It is true that a user can quickly rack up points for posting their information online. Currently the points system does not reward users with additional points for 'helping out'. The planned upgrades to the points system address this and other issues.

So if you have information trapped in your bookmarks that you see fit to share post them. All we ask is you don't purposely create duplicate quests. We would hate have to go on a deleting spree as we merge the quests... ;-)

There's lots of love to go around.

Enjoy and happy questing everyone.
